Getting Around France on a Budget (2026–2027)

Trains, buses, metro, car rental — real prices and how to save on every journey.

France has one of the best transport networks in the world — the challenge is knowing when to take the fast TGV train, the cheap Flixbus, or rent a car. Book trains ahead and you'll pay a fraction of the walk-up price. This guide breaks down every option with real 2026 costs.

🚄 Trains (SNCF) — Fast but Book Ahead

France's TGV high-speed trains are excellent but pricey at the last minute. The trick: book on SNCF Connect 2–3 months ahead for "Prem's" fares. Paris–Lyon can be €25 booked early or €110 walk-up. Under-26? Get the Carte Avantage Jeune for big discounts.

🚌 Buses (Flixbus, BlaBlaCar Bus) — Cheapest

Long-distance buses are the cheapest way to travel France. Slower than trains but a fraction of the price. Paris–Lyon from €15, Paris–Bordeaux from €20. Overnight buses save a night's accommodation. Book on Flixbus or BlaBlaCar Bus.

🚗 BlaBlaCar (Ridesharing) — Local Secret

France invented long-distance ridesharing. BlaBlaCar connects you with drivers going your way — cheaper than trains, faster than buses, and a great way to meet locals. Paris–Lyon around €18–25.

🚗 Car Rental — For the Regions

You don't need a car in cities, but for Provence, the Loire Valley, Normandy, or Dordogne, a car unlocks villages trains don't reach. Expect €280–400/week plus fuel and tolls. See our full car rental guide →
